Showing mixed media
works executed on canvas & panel, Kriss De Jong brings the series Industrial
Occupation to Leedy Voulkos Art Center’s Opie Gallery in Kansas City,
MO.
De Jong creates abstract figures that defy categorization. These figures flow
from pen to paper, transforming to sculptural beings set in an urban surrounding.
Working to reveal a new urban mythology, De Jong captures the industrial landscape.
Odd juxtapositions of derelict buildings and highways, new and old waiting to
reveal the monsters in their midst.
What is a monster is a moving target; a monster is in the eye of the beholder.
Monsters are often created by the viewer about their assessment of a situation.
De Jong reveals these figures in their photographed surroundings, making corporeal
the denizens occupying the industrial landscape. She leaves it to you to decide
their intent. Do you want to hang out with these entities, or run?
The figures are painted in acrylic over pigment print on canvas or watercolor
paper. The canvas is hand stretched, the paper is mounted on handbuilt panels.
Leedy Voulkos is open 11-5 Thursday-Saturday, or by appointment.
Leedy Voulkos is wheelchair accessible through a side entrance, please call
for assistance.
